POMPEJI is inspired by the Pompeian Graffiti. Properties, forms and emotions of the graffiti translated into a contemporary context. Their accuracy and pointed shapes also indicate the use of the stylus and the act of scratching. At that time, these graffiti were scratched into walls with a pointed object. This is taken up again by the fine stroke width in POMPEJI. It is geometrically constructed and at the same time odd and fluid. The main features of the font are its static and line-like attitude with breaks in ascenders and descenders and the many connections that can be made with neighboring letters. In addition, the numerous, ligatures and alternative letters create a unique typeface, as was seen in Pompeii at the time. DECEMBER BENE FUTUIS ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZß&1234567890:;*?!$(o)«ne«...
GRAFFITI AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
CONCEPT AND DESIGN True to its origins, the font POMPEJI was applied directly to a wall. Nowhere else are the ephemeral and expressive qualities of graffiti more tangible. Visible and touchable, these unsolicited messages invite encounters in public space. Lining the hallway in the Muthesius are seven quotes from ancient: popular literature, alongside fragments, greetings, and vulgarities. Together, they offer a glimpse into the rich culture of Pompeian graffiti — while presenting the typeface as an integrated part of its spatial environment.
